What Are We Thankful For In 2020?
by Paul Devlin
As Thanksgiving rolls around we may be forgiven for asking “What are we to be thankful for in 2020”? It’s been a horrendous year due to the worldwide spread of COVID-19, causing mass disruption both in our personal and professional lives.
Many people have lost loved ones they may not have due to the complications associated with the disease, and our basic freedoms have been tested with increased restrictions around the country. Others have been unable to visit elderly relatives, due to the risks, causing increased levels of anxiousness. Many jobs, especially in travel and hospitality, have been lost or furloughed.
However, even in this crazy year, there have been positives that have come from it and here are just a few:
- We’ve been forced to look people in the eye while talking to them as, well, it’s the only way of gauging an expression!
- Even the least tech savvy members of our family have become well versed at video messaging…pets included.
- Car Insurance rates, gas expenditures and commute times are all down due to more people working from home.
- Many people have been forced to pivot and look for positions in different industries, finding happiness and contentment in the process. Something that wouldn’t have happened, had it not have been forced upon them.
- Employees have been forced to cross train in new departments, while learning new skills
- More families are sharing home cooked meals around the kitchen table than ever before.
Ultimately, as bad as this year has been, it will always come down to our family and friends, those we love and those we have lost. Everything else is fixable. If we can look around at years’ end and the love outweighs the lost, we remain in good shape.
Whether your dinner table this year is virtual or bountiful, may we all wish you a Happy Thanksgiving. We do still indeed have so much to give thanks for.
