The Freedom to Choose

by Paul Devlin

On July 4th, 1776 the 13 American colonies chose to sever ties with Britain, thus choosing a new future for this great continent. It was by no means an easy choice. To turn your back on the most powerful Country in the world at that time, was one brave decision, but they looked long term and saw that the only way to a prosperous future was by going it alone. A decision that was to change the course of history.
The word ‘choose’ is indeed a powerful one. How many people have died before realizing they had a choice? How many people have died fighting for our freedom to choose? Whether it be something as simple as changing diet, major or habit, nothing happens in this world until we make a decision to change.
The world wasn’t always as it is today. There is no telling how the world will be tomorrow and only time will tell the story of the future. The story of the future is told by the present and in this present moment we have a choice. We can choose to be whoever we want.
It is true that we are all products of our environment, molded and shaped by what we perceive of our experiences.  If we are not happy with where we are in life, choose to be in a different place. We should always try to surround ourselves with people who bring out the best of us.
We were born for a reason; But it is up to us to tell the world what that reason is. Do not expect our lives to change if we are unwilling to change them ourselves.
We have a unique opportunity in this Country to choose who and what we become, where being free and practicing free will is not only a promise, but the foundation stone of our Country, written into stone that hot July day back in 1776.
So as we celebrate this holiday weekend, let’s raise a glass for the founding fathers plus every person that has chosen to make the USA home over the past 240 years. Their choices yesterday brought us to where we are today, hopefully making an even better world for our children, tomorrow. …Happy  Independence Day!
