Changing Your Direction
by Paul Devlin
Jimmy Dean once said: “I can’t change the direction of the winds, but I can adjust my sails to reach my destination”. In sea-faring terms this would be known as ‘tacking’ where you zig-zag into the wind in order to get to your chosen place. In sailing, to get to where you want to go, you must adjust to the winds and the waves, even if it means going initially off course. Pilots, too, may have to change course mid-flight in order to avoid a potential storm ahead. The key, however, is never losing sight of your destination.
How many times in life do we have moments that derail us or send us off track?. Worse still, how many of us have had this happen and we never got back on track? Those are the people that tend to look as though the weight of the world are on their shoulders. Want to know why? They’re been blown off course and don’t know how to get back on.
If this has happened to you recently, here are some baby steps to help you change direction and get you back on course.
1) Let go of the past. Whatever reason led you down the wrong path in the past, don’t let it define your future steps. As the old adage goes: ‘Taking a step backward after stepping forward is not a disaster..Look on it more as a Cha-Cha!’
2) Get clear about what you want and how you are going to get there. Have faith in yourself and your abilities.
3) Start small. Whether your goal is to lose weight or save a certain amount, don’t look at the big picture. Simply look at what you can do today to make a difference. A lot of positive today’s always make for a better tomorrow.
4) Enjoy the journey. It’s important that whatever direction you are going, we should stop and enjoy the view. Truth be told the view won’t always be pretty, but there is always a lesson to be learned.
Perhaps the most important point is to just keep moving and not be afraid of the journey. As President Franklin D. Roosevelt once said: “To reach a port we must set sail – Sail, not tie at anchor. Sail, not drift”.
